I’ve read online that putting keywords in your title tags can improve my ranking in Google. But the tags are very big and I want to decrease their size. Will Google penalize me for changing the size of my titles.

Google will not penalize you for changing the size of your titles, in fact, it is a common practice and is usually done through the use of css style sheets (this style sheet controls the look of those elements that keep returning on your site – such as the formatting of titles. They allow you to change the overall look of an element on your site with a single update of the code in the style sheet. This is the recommended method of styling your site, because it strips away most of the code needed on your content pages and reduces the amount of information (kilobytes) spiders have to crawl to get to your content (although Yahoo and Google allow your pages to be quite heavy in kilobytes.)

As for putting keywords in your titles: yes, it helps, because the fact that the keyword phrase is found in your title, adds weight to its importance. However, don’t try to force keywords into your title tags, because they are not important enough for that. Also beware that the content of your title tag accurately reflects the content of your page.

Here is a comment (http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/boston-pubcon-2006-day-1/#comment-22227) from Matt Cutts of Google dated April 18, 2006 on his blog: IP delivery: delivering results to users based on IP address. Cloaking: showing different pages to users than to search engines. IP delivery includes things like "users from Britain get sent to the co.uk, users from France get sent to the .fr". This is fine-even Google does this. It's when you do something *special* or out-of-the-ordinary for Googlebo...
