Does updating my site's copy help me rank better Print E-mail

I've read somewhere that if I  update content often, it will really help me in the search engine rankings.

Okay, first of all, if a given page ranks well for your most important keywords, why would you 'update' the content? The page is clearly working well, and a change might actually hurt your rankings.

Just add pages, it keeps your site fresh, alive, and the more (optimized) content, the more people have a reason to surf your site.

Make sure that you have a 'what's new' section on your homepage, so that people can easily see the fresh content, and spiders find the new content by the simple act of crawling your homepage.

This is fine-even Google does this. It's when you do something *special* or out-of-the-ordinary for Googlebo...
