Setting the challenge

Although using the latest research in what makes a page SEO friendly is important, too many SEO gimmicks (ab)use a temporary loophole in the way search engines ‘judge’ a page. Search engines are aware of practices that aim to rank sites with the use of unethical SEO practices that try to rank less relevant, spammy sites high in the ‘organic’ rankings. Once the search engines understand how their algorithms are being abused, they update the formula in order to close the loophole. Consequently, sites that used the SEO gimmick suddenly see their ranking drop or disappear.

Sometimes search engines penalize sites that have made use of these loopholes and have even been known to ban sites from their listings. Dubious SEO got BMW Germany banned from Google, and Google's advisers stepped up their warnings about using short-cuts in your SEO strategy, as in the long run this will hurt your rankings (Matt Cutts, the author of this article, is a Google employee). Google fought back especially hard against SEO abuse in 2007, and many sites with questionable SEO found themselves dropping dramatically in Google’s listings.
